You know it’s serious when the president tweets in all caps.
That’s what he did late Sunday. He threatened Iran after his secretary of state delivered a speech condemning the country and its religious leaders.
Trump directed his tweet at Iranian president Hassan Rouhani. It wasn’t much different than his “fire and fury” threat directed at “Rocket Man,” North Korean hereditary leader and cult of personality object Kim Jung-un.
In three week’s time, Trump and his Goldman Sachs dominated Treasury Department will reimpose sanctions specifically aimed at Iran’s oil market. In other words, the US will restart its economic war against Iran following Trump’s trashing of the nuclear deal.
Mike Pompeo compared Iran’s leaders to the Mafia.
“The level of corruption and wealth among regime leaders shows that Iran is run by something that resembles the Mafia more than a government,” said the secretary of state in a speech to Iranian Americans at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.
According to Pompeo, Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are “merely polished frontmen for the ayatollah’s [Ayatollah Ali Khamenei] international con artistry. Their nuclear deal didn’t make them moderates; it made them wolves in sheep’s clothing.”
The secretary of state promised the US will create a “round-the-clock Farsi channel across television, radio, digital and social media formats” to stir up trouble.
Serious trouble can be expected.
Trump’s team is obsessed with Iran. There is the neocon John Bolton, Trump’s national security adviser, who helped the Bush administration kill over a million Iraqis based on a series of obvious lies that the establishment media pawned off on the American people as fact.
Then we have Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s lawyer. He long ago embraced the Marxist cult of personality, Mujahideen-e Khalq (MEK), a terror group that has killed Americans and was on the terrorist list until removed by Obama’s secretary of state, Hillary Clinton.
Pompeo could have been talking about the United States.
“The bitter irony of the economic situation in Iran is that the regime uses its time to line its own pockets while its people cry out for jobs, reform and opportunity,” Pompeo said. “The Iranian economy is going great—but only if you’re a politically connected member of the elite.”

Mike, of course, is playing on the ignorance of the American people. Nobody mentioned Robert Mercer, the co-chief executive of Renaissance Technologies and a top Trump backer during the election. He runs one of the biggest hedge fund operations in the world. Mercer is behind the secretive quantitive hedge fund Medallion, an exclusive East Setauket, New York-based fund cherished by the financial elite. It “earned” $55 billion in profit over the period of 28 years.
But never mind the irony. By and large, most Americans either believe the propaganda and lies, or they simply don’t care. The US is drifting into a larger war with Iran—a real war with depleted uranium and “smart” bombs, not simply a slow economic strangulation. It is being pushed by John Bolton and his neocon buddies.
Mark Dubowitz runs the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a neocon organization set-up after 9/11. He had nothing but good words for Pompeo’s saber-rattling.
“It framed the secretary’s Reaganesque approach to confronting the Islamic Republic of Iran and his conviction that, with U.S. support, the demand of Iranians for freedom and democracy will leave the Islamic Republic on the ash heap of history as it left the Soviet Union,” he said.
Freedom and democracy. That’s what the Bush neocons promised Iraq. Instead, they got endless sectarian violence and ethnic tension, courtesy of the Pentagon and the CIA. That’s what Iran can expect.
Saddam Hussein was seriously weakened by a decade of punishing and deadly sanctions following Poppa Bush’s invasion. We were cynically sold that war—recall Kuwait babies tossed from incubators—and we are being cynically sold a war waged against Iran.
Recall the two United States Navy riverine command boats and their crews detained by Iran in 2016 after they were caught in Iranian waters off Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf. Obama said the crews were released after discussions with Iran. He said this was possible due to the nuclear accord later killed by Trump.
Trump’s latest fire and fury tweet and Mike Pompeo’s “Reaganesque” speech signal the administration is ready to go after Iran.
Trump might not know it, but broadcasting propaganda into Iran will not work to bring down the government. The objective is not a selfless desire to deliver democracy and freedom to the Iranian people.
The national security state isn’t interested in freedom. It needs enemies to keep the military-industrial complex fat and happy. Iran is a large Muslim country and the American public has been trained to hate and fear Muslims.
Right now the rhetoric between the US and Iran is in escalation mode. But if there is another riverine boat incident or something similar—or worse—the US will once again be off to the races.
I’m not anticipating a reaction on the part of the American people. Many abandoned protest in favor of the Trump derangement syndrome.
It’s only a matter of time now. Israel continues to demand the US use its blood and treasure to take out a viable competitor in the Middle East. It has nothing to do with democracy stifled by brutal mullahs and the Islamic Mafia.
It’s about control.
The political class wants Maryam Rajavi to rule Iran. The cult of personality leader of MEK went out of her way to write a manifesto recognizing the rights of the vampire squid Goldman Sachs and others to rape and pillage the country under a neoliberal “market economy.” It will be the Shah all over again, no doubt including a reformulated Savak, the Shah’s sadistic secret police.
The financial elite and its political class will push for war. The American people will follow along, unable to think for themselves and dependent on the propaganda media to formulate their opinions.
